About

I’m James McKellar, a photographer based in the UK drawn to travel, cities and the atmosphere of places in between.

Photography, for me, is a way of paying attention to the world — noticing moments of light, movement and character that might otherwise pass by.

Much of my work revolves around travel photography, exploring cities and landscapes with a camera. More recently I’ve also started photographing live music and the energy of small venues.

My Photography Mantra

Photography has been part of my life for many years now, though for most of that time it was something I kept largely to myself.

It started simply enough — taking a camera with me when I travelled, photographing places that caught my attention, moments that felt worth remembering. Over time the camera became a quiet companion. It gave me a reason to slow down, to notice the light on a building, the rhythm of a street, or the atmosphere of a place that words alone couldn’t quite capture.

Looking back through my archive now, I realise that photography has followed me across many places — cities, landscapes and small moments scattered around the world. At the time I wasn’t thinking about building a portfolio or sharing the work publicly. I was just responding to what I saw.

Only recently have I started to share more of this journey.

This site is partly an attempt to reflect on those photographs — to revisit the images I’ve made over the years and to continue documenting new ones as I explore new places with a camera in hand.

I’m not a professional photographer, and I don’t pretend to have all the answers. In many ways that’s part of the appeal. Photography remains something I’m always learning, always experimenting with, always seeing differently.

For me it’s less about chasing perfect images and more about paying attention — noticing the small details, the atmosphere of a place, or the fleeting moments that make travel and everyday life interesting.

This site is simply a place to share those observations.
